Getting Social
I won’t bore you with the details and evolution of social media here, but suffice it to say that it is here to stay. Back when I got started in this business, I never would have thought that websites where people sit around and share videos of their kids and pictures of their cats would play into an SEO strategy. But, it does.
Some people will tell you that you need to be on social media so you can interact with your customers. Others will tell you that you need specific social sites to maintain your business. Both are true to some extent, but the real importance lies in having a business profile on every platform you can maintain so you can increase your social influence, which ultimately increases your importance in the eyes of search engines.
The good news is that you do not have to do this yourself. Most small businesses do, but we do have clients that we manage social accounts for them so they can focus on what comes naturally for them – working their business.
Different people use social media in different ways. Different demographics are more prone to one platform over another. But, at the end of the day, if you want to appeal to search engines, you need to be on all that you can comfortably manage. If we were to choose only 1 platform, it would have to be Facebook, followed closely by Youtube, for different reasons.
Facebook is the most social with the biggest market. Youtube, however, is followed closely because it is owned by Google and while there is no preferential treatment given to Youtube over Facebook, there is preferential treatment to video in the SERPs.
Contact your sales rep or use the contact us link to discuss specific strategies if you need them. Otherwise, just try to keep up with all as much as you can. But, and this is the caveat, you have to be able to keep up with them without letting them slide.
